Arthur and Samuel Linton of Aberaman were well-known names in the cycling world of the late 19 century. Some years ago, I was asked by a descendant of Samuel Linton to investigate the history of the family name as, despite all the references to the Lintons, the name was actually Lenton. My report was passed on by the descendant to a historian interested in the brothers so that the “correction” could be made. For any who might be interested in the family history of the Lentons/Lintons, this is the report that I wrote.
In addition to the copies of all documents referred to, I also have 16 newspaper excerpts (1893-1897) referring to the family. If any of this is of interest, please contact me via the About page and I will make them available to you.
I have also provided the report as a PDF – The family history of the Lentons of Aberaman.
The LENTON Family
The LENTONs of Aberdare appear to be the descendants of one family – that of John and Sarah LENTON – who came to Aberdare from Seavington St Michael, Somerset, in the 1870s.
In tracing the family, I have used transcriptions of parish records, census returns, articles in various newspapers and General Register Office index entries. Nothing which I have done can be said to be complete or free of error: source material should be consulted before being relied upon and further searches conducted.
The transcription of Seavington St Michael parish records is provided by volunteers and may be searched at freereg.org.uk.
The transcriptions of Aberdare and Aberaman parish records are provided in booklet form by the Glamorgan Family History Society (GFHS).
The General Register Office (GRO) index entries for the LENTONs/LINTONs of Aberdare are only a guide to the certificates which contain further information. I have compiled a separate list of entries for the surname LENTON/LINTON in the Merthyr Tydfil registration district: there may well be many family members on that list. A limited number of those entries are referred to in the context of this document.
The newspaper collection which I consulted has numerous references to the ‘LINTONs’ arising from their cycling achievements. Out of those, I have copied a Western Mail interview with Arthur ‘LINTON’ which provides a snippet of information about his father.
Census returns are available at ten-year intervals from 1841 to 1911. Whilst very useful, it is worth noting that children who were born and who died between the census returns will not appear on these records. Also, the census returns available prior to 1911 are records compiled from the forms which were filled in by householders, not the forms themselves. It is only in 1911 that the forms which were filled in by the householder are available. All census returns referred to are sourced and a copy provided separately.
The LENTONs at Seavington St Michael, Somerset
The parents of John LENTON were Samuel LENTON and Elizabeth MATRAVES who were married in the parish of Seavington St Michael, Somerset, in 1837 according to the transcription of the parish records.

A further record in the burial register indicates that the child died.
Burial on 12 Mar 1839 of Samuel LINTON, 13m, Register Number 98
The 1841 census shows Samuel and Elizabeth LENTON at an unnamed pub in Seavington St Michael. The publican is John MATRAVES; whilst the 1841 return does not establish his relationship to the family, the 1851 suggests that he is a brother to Elizabeth (see later).

At the time of the 1861 census we find the young couple at Seavington St Michael, Somerset. It is worth noting that the entry above theirs shows an Elizabeth LENTON with the STUCKEY family.

By the 1871 census, John M LENTON is an innkeeper at the Volunteer Inn, Seavington St Michael, Somerset. A son, William, is shown: I have not discovered a corresponding baptism entry for him.

This appears to be the final entry for the family at Seavington St Michael, Somerset.
The LENTONs at Aberaman, Glamorgan
The 1881 census return indicates that son Thomas LENTON was born in 1875/6 at Aberaman, Glamorgan. Taking this together with the above baptism entry at Seavington St Michael, it seems reasonable to place the move of the family between May 1871 and about 1875.
In this context it might be worth noting that the GRO index entries for Merthyr Tydfil Registration District include the birth and death of a Charles LENTON (GRO birth entry for Charles LENTON, registered Mar 1875, Merthyr Tydfil, Vol: 11a, Page 525: GRO death entry for Charles LENTON, registered Mar 1875, Merthyr Tydfil, Vol: 11a, Page 359) and the death of a Thomas LENTON (GRO death entry for Thomas LENTON, age 2, registered Mar 1875, Merthyr Tydfil, Vol: 11a, Page 370).
In 1881, the family are shown living at 218 Cardiff Road, Aberdare, Glamorgan.

An oddity is the name Georgina for the daughter. She is about the same age as would be expected for Ellen Louisa LENTON. Some light might be shed on this by noting a marriage index entry for a Georgina Elinor LINTON in 1885. (Marriage of Georgina Elinor LINTON, registered Mar 1885, Merthyr Tydfil, Vol: 11a Page: 600)
John LENTON junior married Fanny KEY in 1887. (GRO index entry — Marriage of John M LENTON, registered Dec 1887, Merthyr Tydfil, Vol: 11a Page: 786)
Their first child was baptised at St Elvan’s parish church, Aberdare (GFHS — Aberdare, Glamorgan — Parish Church of St Elvan, Baptisms 1863-1889)
17 Jun 1888 – William John, son of John Matravis, a collier, and Fanny LENTON of 2 John Street
This shows John’s middle name as Matravis rather than Male.
The 1891 census shows John and Sarah LENTON living at 6 George Street, Aberdare, Glamorgan.

The baptisms of John and Fanny LENTON’s children are shown in the parish register of St Margaret’s Church, Aberaman (GFHS — Aberaman, Glamorgan — Parish Church of St Margaret, Baptisms 1882-1930, book 3).
18 June 1891 – Alice Maud, dau of John, a collier, and Fanny LINTON of 13 Kiln Street
28 September 1896 – Sarah Jane, dau of John, a collier, and Fannie LINTON of 5 Gladstone Street
22 May 1902 – Arthur, son of John, a collier, and Fanny Augusta LINTON of 5 Gladstone Road
Samuel LENTON married Margaret Annie BUTLER in 1893 (GRO index entry — Marriage of Samuel Matravis LINTON, registered Mar 1893, Merthyr Tydfil, Vol: 11a Page: 621).
The baptisms of their children leading up to the 1901 census are shown in the records of St Margaret’s Church, Aberaman (GFHS — Aberaman, Glamorgan – Parish Church of St Margaret, Baptisms 1882-1930, book 3).
29 Jun 1893 – Arthur Augustus, son of Samuel Matravis, a collier, and Margaret Annie LINTON, of 212 Cardiff Road
6 July 1894 – Albert, son of Samuel, a collier, and Annie Margaret LINTON of 16 Llandewi Street
26 May 1896 – Mary, dau of Samuel, a collier, and Annie LINTON, of 50 George Street
1 Sep 1898 – Kathleen, dau of Samuel Matravis, a prof. Cyclist, and Margaret Annie LINTON of 30 George Street
It is perhaps worth noting here the appearance of Matravis in Samuel’s name.
Reference to John LENTON senior is made in an interview with son Arthur LENTON in the Western Mail of 25 October 1893. This refers to “John LINTON, of the Royal Oak, Aberaman” and refers to the trophies at the ‘hostelry’. As in all the articles that I have found, the family name is recorded as LINTON.
Further details of the LINTON brothers’ cycling success are covered in the copied article from Old Aberdare Vol 5.
Arthur LENTON died in 1896. The GRO index entry shows a middle name of Valentine – whether this is an error in the index or some other error is not clear. (GRO index entry — Death of Arthur Valentine LINTON, Aged 28, registered Sep 1896, Merthyr Tydfil, Vol: 11a Page: 395)

I have not been able to locate 1901 census returns for other LENTON family members. A reading of the death index entries suggests that Sarah LENTON might have died (GRO index entry — Death of Sarah LENTON, Est birth year abt 1846, registered Mar 1895, Merthyr Tydfil, Volume: 11a Page: 516).
John LENTON senior, though, apparently died in 1905 (GRO index entry — Death of John McTravis LENTON, Est birth year abt 1843, age 62, registered Jun 1905, Merthyr Tydfil, Vol: 11a Page:421). I have not been able to locate him on the 1901 census.

#More information is contained in the register.
The 1911 census returns show both John LENTON junior and Samuel LENTON in Aberaman. Both filled out the census return themselves, signing their names LENTON.
